What Is the Hijri Calendar?

The Hijri calendar is the Islamic lunar calendar — 12 months and 354–355 days a year. The current year is 1448 AH, and today in India is 5 Rabi al-Thani 1448 AH.

Every month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon, so each month is 29 or 30 days. Because the year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, the whole Islamic calendar shifts about 11 days earlier each English year — which is why Ramadan and Eid keep moving. The count starts from the Hijrah (622 CE), the Prophet ﷺ migration to Madinah — hence AH (Anno Hegirae).

In India, calendar dates follow local moon sighting and can differ from Saudi Arabia by a day. For today’s date see aaj chand ki tarikh or hijri date today; to convert any date use the Hijri date converter; for a specific month see the Islamic months guide.

Ye calendar India ke liye calculate kiya gaya hai. Mahine ki shuruaat aur tyohaar chand dikhne par ek din aage-peeche ho sakte hain — local Hilal committee ka elaan final hai.
FAQ

Hijri Calendar — FAQs

What is the Hijri calendar year now — 1448 AH?
Yes, the current Islamic (Hijri) year is 1448 AH, and today is 5 Rabi al-Thani 1448 AH (Thursday, 17 September 2026) in India. A Hijri year has 12 lunar months and 354–355 days.
How does the Hijri calendar work?
It is a purely lunar calendar. Each of the 12 months (Muharram to Dhu al-Hijjah) begins when the new crescent moon is sighted, so a month is 29 or 30 days. The whole year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year.
Why do the Gregorian dates in this calendar shift each year?
Because the Hijri year is ~11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, each Islamic month falls about 11 days earlier on the English calendar every year. So Ramadan and Eid keep moving across the seasons.
Are these calendar dates exact?
They are calculated for India and are accurate for planning, but month-boundary dates (like the 1st of Ramadan or Eid) depend on the actual moon sighting and can shift by a day. Your local Hilal committee gives the final word.
