Chand raat kya hai?
Chand raat is the evening when the new crescent moon, the hilal, is sighted in the western sky. The moment the crescent is confirmed, the new Islamic month begins right there at Maghrib, not at midnight. So when you ask chand raat kab hai, the honest answer is: on the 29th evening of the running Islamic month, if the moon is seen.
Every Islamic month starts with a chand raat. That gives you 12 of them in a year: one for Muharram, one for Ramzan, one for Shawwal, and so on. You can see how each month connects to its moon night on our Islamic months guide.
In India, though, "Chand Raat" usually means one specific night: the night before Eid al-Fitr, when the Shawwal crescent is sighted and 29 or 30 Ramzan roze come to an end. That's the chand raat of mehndi, midnight bazaars and sewaiyan, and we cover it in detail below.
One thing to keep straight: the Islamic date changes at sunset. The "night" of chand raat already belongs to the new month. If the Eid moon is sighted this evening, tonight is already the 1st of Shawwal, and Eid namaz is the next morning.
Chand raat kaise tay hoti hai?
Chand raat is decided by actual moon sighting on the 29th evening of the running Islamic month. If the hilal is seen, the new month begins that Maghrib and the old month closes at 29 days. If it isn't seen, the month completes 30 days and chand raat falls the next evening, guaranteed.
That's why no printed calendar can promise the date in advance. A calendar tells you the expected evening; the sky gives the final word. It's also why searches like is today chand raat and chand raat today spike twice in a row, once on the 29th and again on the 30th.
Here's how a 29th evening plays out in India:
- After Maghrib, people and Hilal committee members look for the thin crescent low on the western horizon. It sets quickly, so the window is short, roughly 20 to 40 minutes after sunset.
- Committees such as Delhi's Ruet-e-Hilal committee at Fatehpuri Masjid and the Ruyat-e-Hilal committees in Mumbai, Lucknow and Hyderabad collect shahadat (witness testimonies) from reliable sighters across the country.
- The official announcement usually lands between Maghrib and Isha. Until then, treat every WhatsApp forward as a rumour.
India's chand raat can differ from Saudi Arabia's by a day. Saudi committees go by sightings from their own skies, Indian committees go by Indian skies, and the crescent often becomes visible here one evening later. Neither side is wrong; each region follows what its own horizon shows.
Eid ki chand raat: India ki sabse badi raat
Eid ki chand raat is the night the Shawwal crescent is sighted, ending Ramzan and confirming Eid al-Fitr for the next morning. In India it doubles as the busiest shopping night of the year, with bazaars from Old Delhi's Matia Mahal to Hyderabad's Charminar staying open well past midnight.
The announcement flips the mood of a whole mohalla in minutes. Takbeer rises from the masjid, phones flood with "Eid Mubarak" messages, and families who were counting roze an hour ago are suddenly counting guests for tomorrow.
Then the night gets to work:
- Mehndi stalls draw the longest queues, since hands decorated on chand raat are fresh for Eid morning.
- Chooriyan, kurtas, dupattas, topis and attar sell out in the last-minute Eid shopping rush.
- Kitchens start soaking sewaiyan and chopping dry fruits for sheer khurma, so it's ready straight after Eid namaz.
If you're planning ahead for shopping or travel, our Eid al-Fitr countdown shows how many days are likely left, with the sighting caveat built in.
Chand dekhne ki dua
The Sunnah dua on sighting the new moon is: Allahumma ahillahu 'alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-Islam, rabbi wa rabbuka Allah. Meaning: O Allah, let this moon rise over us with security and iman, with safety and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ would say this on seeing the hilal, and the narration is recorded in Jami' at-Tirmidhi. This is the chand raat ki dua people look up every 29th evening, and it works for any month's crescent, from Muharram to Shawwal.
A few practical points. There's no ritual attached: no facing the moon a certain way, no raising hands in a fixed style. You recite it when your eyes catch the crescent. And if you only hear the committee's announcement without sighting the moon yourself, nothing stops you from asking Allah for a safe, blessed month in your own words.
Har saal chand raat pehle kyun aati hai?
Chand raat shifts about 11 days earlier every year on the English calendar because the Islamic year runs on 12 lunar months, roughly 354 days, against the solar year's 365. The gap pushes every Islamic date, and every chand raat, steadily back through the seasons.
That's why a Ramzan that fell in peak summer a decade ago now arrives in milder months. Over about 33 years, each festival completes a full loop of the English calendar and returns to where it started.
The shift also explains why you can't memorise a fixed English date for any chand raat. The expected date card on this page recalculates it for you, and the sighting on the 29th evening settles it.
And remember, everything in this article applies to all 12 months, not just Eid. Muharram's chand raat sets the date of Ashura, Ramzan's chand raat starts the first roza, and Zil Hijjah's crescent fixes Bakrid. Same 29th-evening sighting, same 29-or-30 logic, every single month. You can browse each one on the Islamic months page.
